Diraz blast: Prime suspect nabbed

ManamaOne person was arrested and three others were identified by the police in connection with a terror blast last month in Diraz, in which a policeman was killed and several others were injured, the Interior Ministry said yesterday.

As part of counter-terrorism operations, the security forces have arrested a “dangerous terrorist” involved in the case, said the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science in Interior Ministry.

Investigators, however, said that search operations are continuing to nab the second suspect identified as Sayed Mohammed Qassim, 25, who is still on the run. He was sentenced earlier to life imprisonment in a terrorist case and was involved in a bomb blast in Deraz in February 2016, as well as other cases related to the manufacturing and possessing of bombs.

“The investigation will continue to find out if there are any links between the suspects and other terrorist cells,” the directorate confirmed in a statement issued here yesterday.

DT News reported on June 19 that on-duty policeman Abdulsamad Haji, 31, was killed in a terrorist explosion that took place near one of the entrances of Diraz village in the Northern Governorate. Two other policemen were also injured in the attack.

Masterminds in Iran

Interior Ministry also identified and released photographs of two fugitives linked to the blast with links to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

The terror group in Bahrain, according to investigators, operated under the direct supervision of the wanted fugitives in Iran in terms of financing, planning and execution, the directorate said in its statement.

The directorate further identified Hussain Ali, 31 and Ahmed Mohammed, 25 as the masterminds in Iran.

The nationality of Hussain Ali, who has been involved in the setting up of many terror cells and terror plots, has been revoked by a court order. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in three cases and was awarded a 15-year jail term in another case.

“He runs terror cells and works as a field coordinator for the Saraya Al Ashtar terrorist group, and has strong ties with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and wanted criminal Murtadha Al Sindi,” the directorate clarified.

Ahmed Mohammed has also been convicted previously in cases related to forming terror cells, attacking police patrols with homemade weapons and possessing bombs.

“The investigation continues to arrest the remaining suspects,” added the Ministry.

The Directorate affirmed that it has taken all legal steps and referred the case to the Public Prosecution.

“The Interior Ministry has affirmed that it is going ahead with its counter-terrorism operations to bring terrorists to justice and maintain the security of the nation, the safety of the public and civil peace.”
