Ban on import of fruits, vegetables

Manama : The government has imposed a ban on import of vegetables and fruits from certain countries in the region.

The decision comes as reports proved that pesticides were excessively used in those countries, the authorities explained.

Agriculture and Marine Resources Affairs in Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry said that the countries include Lebanon, Jordan, Oman, Egypt and Yemen.

It affirmed that the Kingdom has taken precautionary steps to ensure the safety of food products.

“It was proven that pesticides were used in these countries with higher levels of the standards approved by the constitution of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Strict procedures are followed at the Kingdom’s entry points to inspect all the imported food commodities,” a statement issued on Thursday read.

“A ban has been imposed on import of all kinds of chilli pepper and capsicum from Egypt, Apple from Lebanon, chilli, capsicum, cabbage, lettuce, cornflower and eggplant from Jordan and sweet melon, carrot and rocca from Oman and all fruits from Yemen, Agriculture and Marine Resources Affairs added.
