Altaf, Swan cruise to doubles title

Manama : Sameer Altaf and Nadia Swan defeated Nameer Hudhud and Marianna Muursepp 7-4, 7-1 to claim the gold medals and the ‘BTA Torch’ perpetual trophy in the seventh edition of the Bahrain Tennis Academy (BTA)  Social Mixed Doubles Tennis Tournament at the Dilmun Club in Saar.

The one-day event, which specifically targets new and recreational players, was played with a slightly slower ball to give players more time to react.

The 10 teams that registered for the event were split into two groups. Teams then played short matches against all other teams in their group and at the end of the round-robin competition the top two teams from each group progressed to play-off for the medals.

In the play-off for third-place, Mohammed Gaith and Nataliia Matskevych came from a set down to narrowly overcome Michael Salmon and Lyn Barrie 5-7, 7-6, 6-7 to claim the
bronze medals.

BTA and tournament director, Dan Barrie said, “It was an enjoyable afternoon of friendly competition in which new players mixed with some more experienced players to get a taste of competitive matchplay.”
