Budget gets nod from parliament

After continuous discussions and negotiations, the parliament yesterday passed the budget for 2015-16, cutting down expenses and increasing revenue.

As many as 22 parliamentarians voted in favour of the budget yesterday, after some of them expressed their views on a few provisions.

Addressing media after the session, Parliament Chairman Ahmed Al Mulla thanked Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa for his directives and generous support.

Meanwhile, he highlighted the fruitful cooperation between the legislature and executive of the Kingdom.

Later, the parliament referred the budget to the Shura Council.

Speaking to DT News, Chairman of Economic Affairs Committee of the Parliament, Isa Al Kooheji said they held over 20 meetings with the Shura Council members and government officials to build consensus on the budget. “Over 1500 man-hours have been spent behind meetings,” he said.

Meanwhile, he described the current budget as something different, compared to last year’s, as there has been a rise in income and reduction in expenses.

He said, for the first time, assistance for Gulf Air has been reduced by BD30 million, while income has been increased by BD20m, he said.

On the other hand, Works, Municipalities and Urban Planning Affairs Ministry as the Housing Ministry have received BD70 million additionally, said Isa Al Kooheji, adding the budget has also approved a bonus of BD360 for retirees.
