Court rejects appeal in hoax bomb scare

ManamaThe appeals of eight defendants convicted in a hoax bomb case were rejected by the Supreme Appeals Court.

According to court files, the defendants used electrical wires and plastic pipes with a tape to construct the device, and placed it near a vehicle tyre. They also set fire to the tyre.

Bomb experts, who arrived at the scene, found the bomb to be fake. They were earlier handed down five years in prison each.

The first and second defendant were nabbed following police investigations, and they, in turn, revealed the identity of their accomplices.

The first defendant told prosecutors that he had invited the co-defendants to join him.

“We set the tyres on fire and put the device near them in order to cause panic,” the first defendant said.

The defendants were charged with planting a fake bomb, arson and participating in an illegal gathering.
