Labour issue swiftly resolved

ManamaThe construction workers strike at G.P. Zachariades over unpaid wages has been resolved, the authorities confirmed yesterday.

The labourers, working for contracting company G.P. Zachariades, went on strike on July 17 after they were reportedly denied salaries for more than two
months.

Agitated over the issue, the workers reportedly marched towards the Labour and Social Development Ministry in Zayed Town through Sanad. However, a Ministry official interrupted the rally midway and convinced them to return.

In a statement released yesterday, the Ministry announced that the pending salaries have been paid in full to all the workers.

The Ministry also commended G.P. Zachariades for resolving the issue quickly.

DT News understands that all employees have returned to work ending the strike. According to a Ministry source, some of the workers returned to work on the same day itself, while others returned the next day.

The issue was resolved by paying salaries for one-and-a-half months to the workers on the day of the strike itself. The remaining amount was paid later in the
week.

Meeting held

Following the move, Labour and Social Development Minister, Jameel Humaidan held a discussion with Deputy Chairman of G.P. Zachariades Fadhel Sanad at the Ministry’s premises.

During the meeting, Sanad expressed his eagerness to strengthen positive relations between the workers and the management and praised the Ministry’s effort in finding a quick solution.

Minister Humaidan stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Ministry and the private sector companies in order to achieve a safe and stable working environment.

He also praised the company’s role in supporting Bahrainisation and its initiative towards paying citizens without any financial support from the Ministry.
