Budaiya highway to be expanded

Manama : Budaiya Highway, one of the most congested highways in Bahrain, would be expanded in the near future, informed Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry yesterday.

In a statement, the Ministry  added that it is currently assigning a consultant to prepare detailed designs of the major project.

The Ministry’s Roads Assistant Undersecretary Huda Fakhro confirmed that one lane would be added to both sides of the existing highway.

She explained that secondary roads would be constructed near shops and outlets located alongside the highway.

According to Fakhro, the project will include alternative entrances to villages beside Budaiya Highway and the intersections near them (roundabouts near villages) would be developed.

“Pedestrian crossing points would be also established in different areas on the highway,” Fakhro added. According to the latest statistics of the Ministry and the General Directorate of Traffic, more than 68,000 vehicles pass through Budaiya Highway every day.

The project is aiming to increase the highway’s capacity to accommodate 100,000 vehicles.
