New traffic lights installed

About 82 per cent of all traffic lights in Bahrain have already been installed with LED lights in a bid to help reduce risk of traffic accidents.

The old version of traffic lights are being phased out and the LED lights project will be completed by March, announced Ministry of Works Roads Planning & Design Director Kadhim Abdul Latif.

Speaking to DT News, he said the completion of the project will bring immense benefits including saving energy as well as reducing the risk of traffic light failure and minimises the chances of accident.

“The previous version would not last much because of technical faults. For instance, humid weather would affect the traffic light as it caused
water droplets to infiltrate. However, with the new technology, we have a solution that is resistant to all such issues. We expect to finish the project by the end of March,” he said.

“There are many advantages to the new lights. For example, it helps reducing power consumption.” He noted that the new traffic lights would consume only 25 per cent of the power consumption used by the traditional traffic lights. “Apart from saving energy, it also has better visibility even in foggy conditions. It helps drivers clearly see the signals and avoid accidents,” he said.

“Though it is more expensive, the lifespan is longer. It is also heavy duty and comes with a lot of other benefits that justifies the price” he said.
