Bahrain Steps Up Regional Cooperation on Desert Locust Control

Kingdom prepares to host FAO regional commission's 34th session in December

Bahrain has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in combating desert locusts as part of efforts to safeguard agricultural resources and enhance food security.

Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak received Dr Mamoon Al Alawi, Executive Secretary of the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region under the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), during his visit to Bahrain to prepare for the commission's 34th session, which the Kingdom will host in December. The meeting was attended by Agriculture and Animal Wealth Affairs Undersecretary Eng. Asim Abdullatif Abdullah and several ministry officials.

During the meeting, Al Mubarak stressed Bahrain's commitment to enhancing cooperation with the regional commission to support joint efforts in tackling desert locusts, describing the pest as a cross-border threat that requires coordinated regional action to protect agricultural resources and strengthen food security.

The minister also reaffirmed Bahrain's full support for the commission and said the Kingdom was committed to providing all necessary resources to ensure the success of the upcoming meeting, reflecting its belief in the importance of Arab and regional cooperation and stronger coordination among member states.

The two sides reviewed areas of mutual interest and discussed future cooperation, particularly in developing early warning systems, improving data and information sharing, strengthening national capacities, and making greater use of modern technologies for monitoring and risk analysis to improve regional preparedness and response to desert locust outbreaks.

Dr Al Alawi expressed appreciation for Bahrain's continued support for the commission's work and praised the Kingdom's efforts to promote regional cooperation, wishing Bahrain continued success.
