First High Criminal Court of Appeal sentenced a defendant to 10 years in prison and fined him BD5,000 in a drug trafficking case linked to a postal parcel containing marijuana shipped from the United States.

The court also ordered the third defendant’s permanent deportation after completion of his sentence, while upholding the acquittal of two other defendants in the case.

Authorities said the case began after customs officers at Bahrain International Airport intercepted a parcel containing 560.27 grams of marijuana concealed inside layers of clothing.

According to court proceedings, customs officials became suspicious of the shipment after it was scanned through an X-ray machine, leading to the discovery of the hidden narcotics.

Investigators said the first defendant arrived to collect the parcel and was arrested at the scene, while the second defendant was detained outside the collection area.

Police later identified and arrested the third defendant during a handover operation in the Salmaniya area after the first defendant reportedly cooperated with authorities.

Officers said the third defendant attempted to flee when approached by police but was apprehended. Authorities allegedly found 18 packets of suspected marijuana weighing 42.54 grams in his possession.

A subsequent search of his residence uncovered an additional 234.63 grams of marijuana, along with a weighing scale and packaging materials.
