Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Kamal bin Ahmed delivered the following speech:
"Your Highness, Excellencies, Distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen. On behalf of the Chairman of the Supreme Organising Committee, HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa,I am delighted to welcome you to the fourth edition of the Bahrain International Airshow.
"As the Minister responsible for transportation and telecommunications in the Kingdom of Bahrain, I can tell you first-hand that aviation is a crucial pillar of our development, and we are investing significantly in numerous enhancements across infrastructure, regulations, training and international standards.Indeed, we have a strong aviation history that goes back to the early 19th century and coincidentally today, 21st January, we are celebrating Concorde’s 40 years anniversary of its first schedule flight to Bahrain. We are also delighted to celebrate the 200 year Bahrain/UK relationship.
"To the future, our biggest infrastructure project, the Airport Modernisation Programme, is now well underway which will take us to handle around 15 million passengers and ensure that we are future proofed for the next 15 years.
"Of course, BIAS is also a key element to Bahrain’s aviation development. Since its inception in 2010, the airshow has continued to grow from strength to strength and, following an extremely successful show in 2014, is now fully established on the global air show calendar. A unique event, BIAS is a commercially focussed Airshow that draws on Bahrain’s strategic location as the ‘gateway to the gulf’. It offers its elite list of aerospace business participants the opportunity for high-level networking opportunities in exclusive surroundings.
"It has successfully brought together the aerospace supply chain enabling them to do business effectively and with ease, reflecting Bahrain’s status as a regional centre for transport and trade. The strong presence of leading global aerospace and defence companies has signalled the show’s success and reflected Bahrain’s status as a pioneer in the aerospace industry in the Middle East.
"However, the industry is constantly changing with new ground-breaking technologies, acquisitions & mergers, and a stronger desire for new business opportunities. As a result, we are constantly developing and creating new high-level networking platforms to improve the overall experience.
"I am pleased to say, that this edition of the show is set to be the biggest and best yet, with 139 companies and 75 delegations in attendance.
"Our feature pavillion, which provides exhibition space for companies to display their products and services, has grown by nearly 50% from 2014 and we have greater international presence than ever before with 34 countries from around the world being represented at the show, along with a strong presence from local Bahrain-based companies.
"On top of this, our world leading air display continues to be a key strength of the show, with over 100 international, civil, commercial and defence aircraft either flying or on static display.
"All of these things will help ensure BIAS16 is a success, but none of it could happen without His Majesty, who had the vision and leadership to launch this Airshow in 2010 and to make it the success that it is today. I also wish to thank you all for your on-going support. So let me finally take this opportunity to thank you for that, and to wish you a very successful show."
