Bahrain’s presidency of the United Nations Security Council in April 2026 comes at a highly sensitive moment for the region and gives the kingdom a rare opening to press Arab and Gulf concerns at the heart of the UN, MP Hassan Ebrahim said.

He said the post marked an important point in Bahrain’s diplomatic path and showed the standing it had reached on the world stage through what he described as a balanced outlook and a line rooted in backing regional and international security and stability.

Hassan Ebrahim said the timing was especially delicate given the fast-moving strains across the region, particularly after what he described as Iranian attacks on Gulf states and Jordan. He said the situation called for a united and firm international response to protect state sovereignty and guard security and stability.

He said Bahrain’s month at the head of the council would give it a strategic opening to strengthen the Arab and Gulf voice within the United Nations and press the principles of respect for sovereignty and non-interference in domestic affairs. He added that it could also help push for lasting answers to conflicts in a way that could ease regional strain and avert further escalation.

The MP said Bahrain’s diplomatic showing in recent years had proved its ability to build wide international backing, which in his view boded well for its presidency. He said that could help gather support for issues he described as just causes, led by the protection of maritime navigation, the security of energy supplies and the fight against terrorism, in support of collective security.

He said the next stage called for active diplomacy led by reason and good judgement, adding that he believed Bahrain would carry on playing a leading part in narrowing gaps and strengthening international dialogue. That, he said, would feed into greater stability across the region and beyond.

Hassan Ebrahim said Bahrain’s presidency of the Security Council was also a historic chance to cement its place as a state with an active hand in peacemaking. He said he expected the presidency to help produce useful agreement on regional and international security and to support more balanced and lasting international partnerships.
