Creativity and Tradition at “Make a Gergaoon Bag” Workshop at Al Riwaq Art Space

Laughter, colour and the scent of fresh fabric ink filled the rooms of Al Riwaq Art Space as families gathered to design their own Gergaoon bags in a workshop that blended heritage with hands on creativity. Led by renowned Bahraini artist Ali Hussain, the session transformed a simple tote bag into a canvas of memory, identity and Ramadan spirit.

Families gathered for a vibrant and hands-on artistic experience as artist Ali Hussain led an engaging workshop dedicated to designing and creating Gergaoon bags using printmaking techniques and Ramadan-inspired patterns.

The workshop invited participants of all ages to explore the art of printing and drawing while celebrating the cultural significance of Gergaoon. Blending tradition with creativity, attendees experimented with various printmaking methods, learning how to transfer intricate Ramadan motifs and decorative patterns onto fabric tote bags.

Under Ali Hussain’s guidance, participants were introduced to foundational printmaking techniques, including pattern cutting, stamping, layering, and applying textile-safe ink. The session encouraged creative expression while honoring the visual language of Ramadan,  from geometric Islamic designs to crescent moons, lanterns, and traditional motifs associated with the festive season.

The event created a welcoming environment for families to bond through art, allowing children and adults alike to collaborate, experiment, and produce their own unique Gergaoon bags. Each participant left with a personalized creation that reflected both cultural heritage and individual artistic flair.

By combining hands-on learning with the spirit of Ramadan, the workshop successfully fostered community engagement, cultural appreciation, and artistic exploration. The initiative highlights the growing interest in interactive cultural programming that brings traditional celebrations to life through contemporary creative practices.

Established in 1998, Al Riwaq Art Space has long served as a platform for contemporary Bahraini and regional artists. Through exhibitions, residencies and educational programmes, it continues to nurture creativity while honouring tradition.

This workshop was a gentle reminder that culture lives not only in grand events, but in shared tables, ink stained fingers and the simple act of making something beautiful together.
