Bahrain Highlights Human Rights Progress at UN Council

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani, emphasized the Kingdom’s significant progress in upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms, reflecting the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the guidance of HRH Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

The minister spoke via video link at the opening of the current session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, attended by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, and international delegations.

Pioneering Human Rights Initiatives

Dr. Al Zayani highlighted Bahrain’s commitment to human rights through initiatives such as alternative sanctions and the open prison program, which focus on rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders. He also noted Bahrain’s continued classification as Tier 1 in the US State Department’s Human Trafficking Report for the eighth consecutive year.

Press and Media Reforms

The Foreign Minister pointed to recent amendments to the Press, Printing, and Publishing Law, which include:

  • Removal of prison sentences for journalists in publishing cases
  • Regulation of digital media
  • Strengthening legal and professional protections for media professionals

These reforms aim to foster responsible press freedom under the rule of law.

Promoting Tolerance and Peace

Dr. Al Zayani reaffirmed Bahrain’s dedication to tolerance, coexistence, and human solidarity, highlighting the UN’s adoption of Bahrain’s initiative to designate 28 January as International Day of Peaceful Coexistence. He also celebrated Bahrain’s recognition in the Guinness World Records for the highest density of places of worship, reflecting its commitment to religious freedom.

Commitment to Diplomacy and Global Peace

The minister stressed Bahrain’s diplomatic approach to conflict resolution, noting its participation in the “Peace Council” and support for a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue, including backing the peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump for Gaza.

UN Security Council Membership

Bahrain’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2026–2027 underscores its active role in the international system, its adherence to global principles, and its readiness to contribute to addressing worldwide challenges.

Dr. Al Zayani concluded by affirming Bahrain’s priorities during its Security Council tenure: supporting international law, promoting dialogue and coexistence, engaging in humanitarian work, and strengthening peace, stability, and multilateralism globally.
