Bahrain Urges Iraq to Respect Kuwait’s Sovereignty
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain has expressed deep concern regarding the lists of coordinates and the map submitted by the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, which it said infringe upon the sovereignty of the sisterly State of Kuwait over its maritime zones and established water elevations.
In a statement, the Ministry noted that the Iraqi submission included areas such as Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij, which fall under Kuwait’s sovereign maritime territory.
Bahrain reaffirmed Kuwait’s full sovereignty over its maritime areas and fixed water elevations, rejecting categorically any claims by other parties over them.
The Ministry urged Iraq to take into consideration the long-standing historical relations between Kuwait and Iraq and their brotherly peoples, and to act seriously and responsibly in accordance with the rules and principles of international law.
It further stressed the importance of adhering to the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982), as well as existing bilateral agreements, understandings, and memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries.
