Bahrain’s Land Area Expands to 787.79 km², Official Survey Reveals

Bahrain’s total land area has reached 787.79 square kilometers, according to the latest official data released by the Survey and Land Registration Bureau (SLRB). The figures, published on the national Open Data Platform, show that the Kingdom’s landmass grew by one square kilometer compared to 2023, marking a total increase of 4.8 square kilometers over the past five years. In 2019, Bahrain’s land area was recorded at approximately 783 square kilometers.

The report also noted that Bahrain’s territorial waters cover around 7,481 square kilometers, a figure that has remained virtually unchanged since 2016, reflecting the stability of the Kingdom’s maritime boundaries. Over the last nine years, Bahrain’s total land area has expanded by about eight square kilometers, encompassing the Kingdom’s main islands — Bahrain Island, Muharraq, Sitra, Jidda, Asry, and Umm an Nasan.

According to the breakdown by governorates, the Southern Governorate remains the largest, accounting for 488.77 square kilometers, or 62% of Bahrain’s total land area. It is followed by the Northern Governorate with 145.69 square kilometers, the Capital Governorate with 79.23 square kilometers, and Muharraq Governorate with 74.1 square kilometers.

The data shows that the Southern Governorate maintained an area of around 489 square kilometers between 2020 and 2023, before slightly adjusting to 488.77 square kilometers in 2024 following recent survey updates. The Northern Governorate, meanwhile, consistently recorded around 146 square kilometers between 2020 and 2023, except for an anomaly in 2021, when data reflected an unusually higher figure.

As for the Capital Governorate, its land area fluctuated between 73 and 79 square kilometers from 2020 to 2024, reaching its highest recorded size — 79.23 square kilometers — in 2024. In contrast, Muharraq Governorate maintained a steady area of about 74 square kilometers throughout the same period, showing no significant changes in its geographical boundaries.
