Shura Council Unanimously Approves New Press and Media Law
The Shura Council today unanimously approved Bahrain’s new Press and Media Law following extensive deliberations marked by strong support from council members. The session was attended by several editors-in-chief and journalists representing leading local media institutions, underscoring the significance of the occasion for Bahrain’s media community.
The Council’s approval follows the law’s earlier passage by the Council of Representatives in the previous legislative term, completing its parliamentary journey. The legislation will now be submitted to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for royal ratification.
The new law represents a pivotal milestone in Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to modernize its media legislation. Among its key provisions, it eliminates prison sentences in publication-related cases, replacing them with fines, and introduces a comprehensive framework to regulate digital and electronic media — now an essential part of today’s communication landscape. It also strengthens legal and professional protections for journalists, ensuring greater freedom and security in their work.
Beyond reforming existing laws, the legislation seeks to establish a balanced framework that safeguards freedom of opinion and expression while upholding the principles of responsible and ethical journalism. The move reflects Bahrain’s commitment to fostering a progressive, open, and forward-looking media environment that aligns with global developments in the industry.
