A design-stage plan to line King Hamad and Shaikh Jaber highways with trees, part of the 2025–26 programme, goes to Parliament on Tuesday, to cool roads and clean the air.
The motion is lodged by MPs Lulwa Al Rumaihi, Munir Seroor, Hassan Bukhamas, Hanan Ali and Mamdouh Al Saleh.
It asks the competent authorities to plant along both routes and expand green strips. The plan sits within Bahrain’s long-term environmental path, including the national aim of net zero by 2060.
Corridors
It is framed to cut roadside heat and improve air quality on two major corridors.
The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs said the scheme fits with its countrywide work on service, leisure and streetscape projects, and will be scheduled by ministerial priorities and the funds set aside.
Since the greening drive began, the ministry has planted about 70,000 trees across the Southern Governorate to improve urban conditions.
Design stage
The ministry added that the two highways are listed in phase one of a streets and junctions greening and beautification programme for 2025– 26, and this item is now at the design stage.
The Southern Municipal Council has backed the proposal, citing air-quality gains, lower roadside temperatures and the removal of bare ground along verges.
Parliament’s Public Utilities and Environment Committee recommends approval with all members present in agreement, saying the plan meets public-interest grounds.
