Group Chief Executive Mark Thomas said the initiative was deeply personal for many across the company.

“If you look at our employees and their families, we’ve probably got 20,000 people connected to Bapco Energies in Bahrain, and no one is more than three people away from someone who has suffered from breast cancer,” he said.

Thomas emphasised that health and happiness are intertwined, noting that a healthy workforce means a more focused and productive one.

“Good health means good happiness. A healthy employee and a healthy family is a happy family. As a result, we get good engagement with our employees and just a good company overall,” he said.

Prevention message

Highlighting the importance of early detection, Thomas urged participants not to delay screening. “Breast cancer is preventable and treatable. Early detection gives you the best chance of getting through the disease and living a long life,” he said.

Bapco Energies’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tariq Hameed said the company’s longstanding engagement in public health extended far beyond October. “We do this practically every month for all different cancers, not just breast cancer,” he said, adding that next month’s focus would shift to diabetes awareness.

Calling Bahrain “one of the best places in the world” for cancer diagnostics, Dr. Hameed underscored that early detection can make breast cancer as manageable as other common illnesses. “If you diagnose it at an early stage, it’s like any other sickness - you can get treated early and return to your normal life,” he said.

He added that many of his patients had recovered and continued to lead healthy lives after early diagnosis and treatment. The walkathon reflected Bapco Energies’ broader corporate social responsibility strategy, w h i c h seeks to promote awareness and preventive care while strengthening community ties.
