A plan is underway to construct Bahrain’s first solar power plant in the southern region near Bilaj Al Jazayer.

The 1.2-square-kilometre facility will feature state-of-the-art solar technology to meet the Kingdom’s growing energy demand and strengthen long-term energy security.

Once operational, the plant is expected to supply electricity to around 6,300 homes and reduce carbon emissions by more than 100,000 tonnes annually, reinforcing Bahrain’s sustainability objectives and supporting future infrastructure growth.

Project

His Excellency Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), announced the launch of a tender for the project, which will have a generation capacity of approximately 150 megawatts.

The initiative will be developed in partnership with the private sector.

The project is part of national efforts to expand the use of renewable energy and promote environmental sustainability, in line with Bahrain’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

Consultancy

A consortium of international and local consultancy firms has been appointed to oversee the project.

KPMG Fakhro will serve as the financial advisor, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff as the technical advisor, and Trowers & Hamlins as the legal advisor, coinciding with the tender’s release.

Mohammed emphasised that the project marks a significant step toward enhancing Bahrain’s sustainable energy infrastructure and strengthening collaboration with the private sector to increase the share of renewables in the national energy mix.
