Manama Souq Gateway Artwork Removed After 8 Years
As part of the ongoing Manama Souq Development Project led by the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), the well-known art installation “Al-Murtasha” has been removed from the entrance of Bab Al Bahrain.
The installation, which had decorated the ceiling of the souq’s main entrance since 2017, was considered one of the most distinctive artistic features of the area. It was made up of more than 20,000 gold-coated metallic chains shaped like coins, suspended from a ceiling height of nearly seven meters, creating a striking visual display.
The project was originally launched by the Ministry of Culture in 2017 to serve as a welcoming gateway for visitors to the Manama Souq, blending the market’s historic and cultural identity with a contemporary artistic touch.
Its removal comes as part of a broader development plan for the souq, in line with BTEA’s new vision that focuses on enhancing the market’s heritage identity while introducing modern elements to improve visitor experience.
BTEA is expected to unveil new designs and facilities in the coming period, aiming to transform the Manama Souq into an even more attractive destination for both tourists and residents, while preserving its cultural and historical character as a vital part of Bahrain’s capital.
