Bahrain to Plant 100,000 Trees in Historic Muharraq City

The Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture has announced an ambitious plan to plant 100,000 trees and create 72 green squares covering 12,000 square meters as part of a comprehensive project to develop the historic city of Muharraq.

The initiative comes in line with the Royal Decree of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to preserve Bahrain’s historical and cultural identity, restore Isa Al Kabeer Palace, and enhance Muharraq City while maintaining its unique heritage. It also follows directives from His Royal Highness Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa to activate a detailed development plan for the city.

Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture, Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, highlighted the government’s commitment, in coordination with relevant authorities, to organize the urban structure of Muharraq, preserve its architectural and historical character, and provide modern services that meet the needs of residents and visitors.

“The project focuses on maintaining heritage buildings and landmarks while promoting integrated urban development that covers environmental, social, and urban aspects,” said Al Mubarak. “We aim to diversify tree species suited to the local environment, create shaded areas for comfort, and provide green spaces that enhance the city’s aesthetic and ecological value.”

The development plan includes 72 new green squares totaling 12,000 square meters, contributing to environmental sustainability in the heart of the historic city.

Al Mubarak emphasized Bahrain’s dedication to sustainable urban development, in line with the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, ensuring the continuity and integration of projects. He added that preserving the city’s heritage fabric and creating visual harmony between historic and modern buildings are central to all planning and implementation stages.

He concluded by noting that the Muharraq City development project is a national initiative aimed at strengthening Bahrain’s cultural and historical identity while promoting sustainable development, reaffirming the city’s role as a major cultural and civilizational hub in the kingdom and the region.
