Quick Spark Turns Bahraini Apartment into Flames:
A quiet evening in a Lozi apartment quickly turned chaotic as smoke filled the rooms and residents rushed to safety. Authorities say an electrical short circuit was the likely cause.
Investigations into similar cases often reveal common issues such as overloaded air conditioners, faulty wiring, or non-genuine chargers. Experts warn that such incidents are not rare, especially during Bahrain’s hot summer months. As residents rely heavily on air conditioning, even a small spark can lead to a dangerous fire.
Hussein Shaban, Health and Safety Director at Bahrain International Airport, said around 60% of home fires are caused by electricity. “Many people use poor-quality wiring or overload sockets with heavy appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, or irons,” he explained. “This causes wires to overheat, often resulting in a short circuit and fire.”
Shaban noted that older homes are more at risk due to worn-out wiring, but even modern buildings can be affected when contractors use low-quality materials or improper installation methods.
He emphasized that proper electrical load distribution, regular inspections, and installing smoke detectors and circuit breakers are essential to protecting lives and property.
Bahrain is recognized as a leader in health and safety regulations. Authorities continue to update standards, monitor buildings and imported electrical devices, and enforce safety certifications based on risk levels.
Shaban concluded with a warning to residents: “Family safety cannot be replaced. Regular maintenance and addressing even minor electrical issues are the first line of defense. Installing alarms, fire extinguishers, and distributing electrical loads correctly may seem simple, but these steps can save lives. Everything can be replaced—except human life.”
