CEO of Bahrain Space Agency Highlights Future of Quantum Communications

Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Esiri, CEO of the Bahrain Space Agency, took part in a specialized technical seminar titled “Quantum Key Distribution from Space: Securing the Communications of the Future.” The event brought together leaders from Singapore-based Spectral, a pioneer in satellite-based quantum communication, as part of Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to adopt advanced technologies in space cybersecurity.

Dr. Al-Esiri explained that the seminar, featuring Spectral founders Chun Yang Lum and Robert Bedington, focused on the technological foundations of global quantum communication networks. Key discussions included the SpooQy-1 satellite, the world’s first satellite for quantum key distribution, and how satellites can outperform fiber optics in securing continental communications through quantum entanglement-based encryption. The seminar also highlighted strategic partnerships with tech giants Thales and SES to expand the reach of the “quantum internet.”

“The seminar outlined a five-year roadmap to connect major global cities through an unhackable communication network, supported by a constellation of 10 to 15 satellites,” Dr. Al-Esiri said.

He concluded by emphasizing that the quantum revolution will reshape cybersecurity in the coming decade, and Bahrain’s participation reflects the kingdom’s commitment to adopting future technologies to protect critical infrastructure and prepare for a post-traditional encryption era.

Spectral, headquartered in Singapore, is the first company worldwide to successfully send quantum encryption keys from space via its SpooQy-1 satellite.
