Reckless drivers should be denied access to alternative sentencing schemes, MP Jalal Kadhem has said, calling for tougher enforcement of existing traffic laws and a no-nonsense approach to fatal crashes.
He described the current legal framework as harsh enough on paper but rarely applied with the force needed.
“The laws are there, and they’re tough ,” he said . “What’s missing is proper follow-through.”
Severe penalties
Kadhem said the most severe penalties ought to be imposed on drivers found responsible for deadly or severe crashes, especially when there is proof of recklessness, whether they were sober or under the influence.
He insisted such drivers should be barred from any form of alternative punishment.
The lawmaker also said the issue could not be solved by the law alone.
He urged more police patrols on the roads, extra checkpoints in busy areas and expanded use of security cameras to catch offenders in real time.
Innocent lives
“The lives of the innocent aren’t something to play around with,” he said. “If we’re serious, the law must be applied as it’s written, without exception.”
Kadhem ended by urging people to take some responsibility themselves.
He said safer roads start with drivers who know what they’re doing and take care. “It’s not just the state’s job,” he said. “Every driver has a part to play.”
