Two Asians get life sentences

Two Asian men who were nabbed with 2-kilogram heroin were sentenced to life in prison. The first accused, aged 39, was arrested with 69 capsules of heroin in his stomach, while the second, who was supposed to receive the capsules, was arrested in a sting operation.

The 39-year-old’s crime came to light upon his arrival in Bahrain after officials at the Airport spotted him with symptoms of extreme fatigue.

When enquired, he immediately uncovered to them that he was hiding capsules in his stomach. Therefore he was taken directly to hospital, where he was given medications to help him dispose the drugs out of his body.

“I wanted a work permit in Bahrain, and a fellow countryman promised it once I smuggle the drugs. He also pledged to give my family 25,000 Pakistani rupees (BD93) when I hand the drugs to someone living in Bahrain,” the accused told prosecutors.

“When I boarded the plane, I felt very tired. I disclosed everything to officers when they enquired,” he said.

The second accused  was later arrested by police after the first accused agreed to help.

The 29-year-old accused was reportedly lured by officers to come and receive the capsules. However, the accused sent another person to collect it and escaped arrest.

But officers later nabbed him from a campsite in Sakhir, and seized from him 53 capsules of heroin.

“I was asked to receive the capsules and hand them to another man,” the second accused said in his statement.

However, he failed to identify the “man” during questioning, prompting prosecutors to charge him of drug peddling.
