A recent United Nations report on Bahrain's 2023 achievements has commended Bahrain for its active role in developing a regional counter-terrorism strategy. The report also highlighted the growing awareness among key stakeholders in the private sector regarding opportunities to increase women's participation and leadership in this field, driven by ongoing efforts and support from UN Women.
The report further acknowledged Bahrain's proactive measures in combating human trafficking. Since 2021, over 100 frontline workers have been trained as instructors, with a focus on regional collaboration and knowledge sharing. This initiative, spearheaded by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and funded by the Bahraini government, is a testament to Bahrain's commitment to tackling human trafficking, having been ranked in Tier 1 of the annual Trafficking in Persons report for six consecutive years.
The report noted the training of 102 frontline workers from seven sectors, including criminal justice, labour inspection, healthcare, media, aviation, airports, and academia. Notably, 51% of the trainees were women.
The year 2023 witnessed significant progress in implementing the "Decade of Action" plan, particularly as the 2030 deadline approaches. The report stated that Bahrain aims not only to achieve its 2030 goals but also to play a leading role in promoting best practices and supporting other nations through South-South cooperation and global knowledge sharing.
According to the report, Bahrain has strengthened coordination for gender equality in its work with the UN, reinforcing its leadership in implementing a gender-sensitive approach to the 2030 Agenda through gender equality and women's empowerment within the UN's country programme. The report also highlighted the repeal of Article 353 of the 1976 Penal Code to enhance the protection of women's fundamental rights.
The report emphasised Bahrain's commitment to fulfilling its obligations under international environmental treaties and protocols. This includes updating national legislation related to ozone-depleting substances, phasing out hydrochlorofluorocarbons, and hosting a regional workshop on plastic pollution in West Asia in December 2023.
Throughout the year, Bahrain has also focused on ensuring better protection, health, and occupational safety for migrant workers and domestic workers, according to the report.
The report acknowledged Bahrain's high ranking in the Human Development Index, emphasising its unique challenges and model for the final stage of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The country's potential to serve as a hub for innovation and generate best practices can guide sustainable development policies, programs, and practices globally.
The year 2024 is expected to be a pivotal year for the UN Country Team in Bahrain, focusing on innovation and engaging diverse stakeholder groups through joint initiatives. This includes implementing a mangrove tree retention project in an urban area in partnership with Bahrain and the private sector, developing projects on early childhood education and care, and strengthening mechanisms to combat human trafficking.
