Mom to sue nursery school in Bahrain for negligence

ManamaA mother is suing a local nursery school accusing it of negligence, deceit and endangering the life of her daughter. The mother claimed that her two-year-old daughter Fatima was left suffering from a fractured shoulder at the nursery for over six hours without any attention.

Speaking to DT News yesterday, Um Fatima told that the incident took place at Madeleine’s Preschool on Thursday and that she was initially informed by the teachers that they (parents) should pick Fatima up from the nursery as she’s sleeping.

“I sent her father along with the nanny to pick her up since I was at work. She was crying at the time they picked her up but they didn’t have any clue about the fracture,” Um Fatima said. She said when she reached home after work she saw her child crying hysterically, in pain and in a terrible condition.

“I knew something isn’t right as my daughter was in wrenching pain. I contacted the school to clarify what has happened to my daughter but reached a dead-end, as I was told by the educator responsible for my daughter’s class that she was not allowed to speak to parents. They weren’t cooperative at all, and when I threatened that I will take the matter to the police if they continue to deny informing me about what happened to my daughter, another teacher told me that she took a tumble from the slide,” she explained. The worried mother immediately took her daughter to the hospital after suspecting the behaviour of the teachers. At the hospital, X-ray examinations showed that Fatima suffered from a fractured shoulder. Um Fatima told that the school continued to deny their responsibility of her daughter’s injury.

She also said that the school rejected her repeated requests to see the footage of the surveillance cameras installed inside the school to acknowledge what has really happened to her daughter.

“I insisted to know what happened to my daughter inside the school. They avoided my requests with several excuses, such as not having access to the school after school hours or not knowing how the cameras worked. At the end of it I was shocked when they told me that the cameras weren’t recording since September,” the woman said. She confirmed that she immediately lodged a complaint against the school at Nabih Saleh police station and that she’s now in the process of hiring an attorney to take the matter to the court.

“How could they have surveillance cameras that don’t record what’s happening inside the school. What if my daughter or any other child was abused or mistreated,” the concerned mother questioned.

She added, “If I was told the truth from the beginning I wouldn’t have taken the matter to the police. Maybe register my daughter somewhere else. Accidents do happen. But they weren’t honest with me and I’m still unaware of what has caused this severe injury to my child. We paid annual fees of BD2,400 to ensure our child is in good hands, but this is disappointing.”

A spokesperson from Education Ministry told DT News that no action will be taken by the ministry, as nurseries come under the responsibility of Labour and Social Development Ministry.
