Calls for surveillance cameras and temporary lighting on the industrial road in Sitra have been submitted to the government by MPs Jaleela Alawi Al Sayed and Mohsen Al Asbool, following the death of a man in a traffic accident.

The pair said the road, which cuts through the village’s industrial zone, is pitch black at night and lacks even the most basic safety features, despite carrying a steady stream of lorries, cars and workers at all hours.

They warned that the situation has spiralled, with mounting complaints from residents and repeated collisions.

In their joint submission, they pressed for cameras to help police the area and deter rule-breaking, and for lights, even if only temporary, to make the road passable and less of a hazard once night falls.

Danger

They added that the danger extends beyond this single stretch.

Other roads across Sitra, many of which are currently being dug up or reworked, are also in need of quick fixes to prevent further loss of life while those projects crawl to completion.

“The darkness is choking the island,” they said, describing the toll it is taking on road safety.

Action

They called on those in charge to step in and take action before the next tragedy.

Their final remark was pointed: repeated public appeals should not be met with silence, especially where lives are concerned.

The proposal, they said, must be studied and acted upon without delay.
