His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Shaikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah has reaffirmed commitment to national unity as the "most powerful weapon" to confront various challenges. In an address at the opening of the Parliament's fifth regular session of the 15th legislative term, Shaikh Nawaf called on citizens for "good selection" of their future parliament members. The government on Monday approved a bill to hold parliamentary elections on December 5, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported. The Amir thanked Speaker Marzouq Al Ghanim and Prime Minister Shaikh Sabah Khaled Al Hamad Al Sabah for their relentless efforts during the "exceptional circumstances" caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Loyalty of Kuwaitis should always be for their nation, the Amir said, urging to follow performance of their representatives at parliament in their "serious monitoring, constructive legislation and full commitment to the constitution." The Amir, who paid tribute to the late Amir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah for his service to his nation and people, said he would follow on his path.

He called for abiding by national unity as the "most powerful weapon" against all challenges, dangers and crises. "I would also like, God's willing, to reaffirm our commitment to our democracy, respect of the constitution, state of law and institutions and improve our parliamentary practice," he said. "We would not say today we are in a parliamentary experiment but a deep-rooted practice that has been ongoing for around 60 years."
