Macron Calls Trump Talks 'Very Constructive' Ahead of UN Assembly

New York : French President Emmanuel Macron announced that he held ‘very constructive’ talks with US counterpart Donald Trump regarding ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.

 The high-stakes meeting took place in New York as leaders arrived ahead of the annual United Nations General Assembly.

A central focus of their discussion was securing vital energy shipping lanes. Macron pointed to a mutual willingness to find solutions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blockaded by Iran during the Middle East conflict. 

They also evaluated the fragile situation in the Red Sea, where Iran-backed Houthi rebels have complicated transit routes crucial for maintaining stable global oil prices.

On the topic of Russia and Ukraine, Macron strongly pressed Trump on the urgent need to supply defensive weapons systems to Kyiv. 

The French leader emphasised that accelerating the delivery of missile interceptors is a critical defensive measure to protect Ukrainian infrastructure. Additionally, both leaders discussed the potential implementation of an energy truce and a moratorium in the Black Sea.

Before arriving in New York, Macron stopped at the French territory of Saint Pierre and Miquelon to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has faced recent tariff disputes with Washington.

Macron also arranged to debrief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the UN summit regarding the outcome of his talks with Trump.
