Google Fined €403 Million Over Location Data Privacy Breaches
Ireland’s Data Protection Commission has fined Google €403 million ($463 million) over breaches of European privacy rules concerning its handling of users’ location data.
The commission said an investigation found that Google did not process location data lawfully or fairly through its “Web & App Activity” and “Location History” services.
The Web & App Activity setting tracks users’ browsing and search history, while Location History records places users have visited through their mobile phones.
The regulator also found that Google failed to meet certain legal and transparency requirements when processing personal data linked to the “Location Accuracy” feature in the Android operating system.
The investigation began six years ago and examined Google’s compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) from its introduction in 2018 through February 2020.
