UN Nuclear Watchdog Monitors 73 Tonnes of Uranium in Syria

Vienna: The International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, reported that it is monitoring approximately 73 tonnes of natural uranium in Syria, while continuing to track nuclear materials and activities in the country.

According to the agency, the material containing uranium in various forms has been placed under IAEA safeguards and surveillance. This development occurs as Syria faces renewed international scrutiny over its nuclear activities and the location of nuclear materials stockpiled under the prior administration.

The IAEA has been collaborating with Syrian authorities to track nuclear material and examine facilities that had not been previously reported to the agency. Its inspectors have visited multiple sites in an effort to gain a full understanding of Syria’s former nuclear program.

The agency’s monitoring aims to verify that the material stays properly accounted for and is not misused for non-peaceful purposes. The IAEA has also emphasized the need for ongoing access to sites in Syria and collaboration from the authorities.

The finding and tracking of the uranium followed years of inquiries into Syria’s suspected secret nuclear activities, such as a rumoured reactor facility in Deir Ezzor that was hit by an Israeli airstrike in 2007.
