NGOs Raise Alarm Over Prison Deaths Amid Tunisia Heatwave

Tunis: Human rights organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have expressed concern about the deaths of inmates during Tunisia's recent record heatwave, citing severe prison conditions and insufficient protection from high temperatures.
According to the Tunisian League for Human Rights, at least 20 people died in jail in recent weeks, with excessive heat suspected to be a contributing factor. Temperatures in certain regions of the country reached 49°C, and rights groups warned that overcrowded prisons might make detainees especially vulnerable.
In addition, the Committee to Protect Journalists said that 10 prisoners perished as a result of the extreme heatwave, raising worries about the conditions of detainees.
Rights groups have pushed Tunisian authorities to take quick action, including as boosting ventilation, ensuring access to water and medical care, and sheltering prisoners from excessive heat.
The deaths raised scrutiny of Tunisia's prison conditions as the country battles increasingly intense heatwaves.
