Princess Diana’s iconic ‘revenge dress’ goes up for auction

London: Princess Diana's famed revenge dress is being auctioned off nearly three decades after she initially made fashion history wearing it. The classic black silk short dress designed by British-Greek designer Christina Stambolian is projected to sell for between $150,000 and $300,000 at Sotheby's auction in New York on December 9.

Diana donned the daring off-the-shoulder gown for a Vanity Fair gala at London's Serpentine Gallery on June 29, 1994. The performance came just hours after then-Prince Charles officially admitted his affair in a broadcast interview, garnering the frock the enduring label ‘revenge dress’.

The gown, which had a fitted form, a short hemline, and a dramatic train, was a remarkable departure from Diana's typically conventional royal attire. Her confident performance that night rapidly became one of the most unforgettable moments in her public life.

Diana later sold the garment at a charity auction in 1997, along with other items from her wardrobe, shortly before her death. It has remained one of the most iconic pieces associated with the Princess and her impact on modern fashion.

The dress will be exhibited in London, Hong Kong, and Geneva before being sold at Sotheby's December auction. Its return to auction is expected to draw collectors and Diana fans from all around the world.
