Russian President Vladimir Putin begins 3-day India visit

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Friday to begin a three-day visit for bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of the annual BRICS summit. 

Opening on Saturday, the 11-member gathering will focus heavily on global trade turbulence, energy security, and ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The summit marks a major diplomatic event, with Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled to arrive Saturday for his first visit to India since 2019.

Prime Minister Modi is also slated to hold talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, alongside attending leaders from the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

The recent expansion of BRICS has brought nations with contrasting positions together, making the Middle East conflict a central fault line for the bloc.

Analysts note that while expansion was once viewed as an achievement, diverse geopolitical alignments now present a stern test to the group's cohesion.

Meanwhile, India continues to manage regional energy disruptions by turning to Russia for critical fuel supplies. At the same time, New Delhi carefully balances its strategic ties across Washington, Tehran, and Kyiv.
