Tokyo, Japan: Japanese baseball legend and atomic bomb survivor Isao Harimoto has died at the age of 86. Dubbed the ‘Hit Machine,’ he holds Japan's record for career hits.
Harimoto accumulated 3,085 career hits across 23 professional seasons, becoming the first player in Japanese baseball to reach the 3,000-hit milestone. His distinguished career included playing for several teams, including the Yomiuri Giants.
Born to Korean parents in Japan, Harimoto survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as a five-year-old after his mother shielded him and his sister from the blast.
He learned to play left-handed after an accident at age four left him with severe burns and limited mobility in his right hand.
After retiring in 1981, Harimoto worked as a television commentator and was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.
