Max Verstappen claimed his first pole position of the 2026 Formula 1 season after setting the fastest time in all three qualifying sessions for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
The Red Bull driver and his team had not secured pole so far this season, but returned to the top at the Sepang International Circuit with their first pole since the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Verstappen will start the race from the front of the grid as he looks to repeat his previous success at Sepang. He won the last Formula 1 race held at the circuit in 2017.
Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton qualified second, setting up a potential battle with his former rival when the race gets underway.
Isack Hadjar initially secured third place for Red Bull, but a grid penalty will drop him down the starting order.
Verstappen’s pole puts him in a strong position for Sunday’s race as Formula 1 returns to Sepang for the first time since 2017.
