Belgrade: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy started his first official visit to Serbia, where he aims to deepen ties with a country that has maintained close contacts with Russia while pursuing closer integration with the European Union.

Zelenskyy met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and discussed security, economic cooperation, and Ukraine's ties with the EU. The visit is a crucial diplomatic step as Kyiv seeks broader European support during its struggle with Russia.

Serbia has criticised Russia's incursion and accepted Ukraine's territorial integrity, but it has not joined Western sanctions against Moscow and maintains close political and economic ties with Russia. Vučić aims to balance these ties with Serbia's desire to join the EU.

Zelenskyy's visit thus has unique diplomatic significance, emphasising Belgrade's attempts to maintain a balance between Moscow, Kyiv, and Brussels while Ukraine seeks to increase cooperation with nations that have historically kept strong ties with Russia.
