Cali: Colombia's newly ielected President Abelardo de la Espriella has vowed to undertake a tough fight against drug traffickers and armed groups, claiming that his government will ‘defeat narco-terrorists’ and restore national security.

De la Espriella, a right-wing political novice who took over the office on Friday, opposed his predecessor Gustavo Petro's approach of dealing with armed organisations, warning that criminals who refuse to surrender will face military force. He also promised to remove illegal coca fields and restart aerial spraying to combat coca growing.

His election in Cali represented a significant political shift to the right in Colombia. The new president has also hinted at stronger security relations with the United States as he strives to fight drug trafficking, organised crime, and armed rebel groups.
