Three killed in Russian strikes on Kyiv region, including child

Three persons died in Russian strikes in Ukraine's Kyiv region overnight, including a toddler, according to a regional military spokesman on Saturday, as Moscow maintained its aircraft attacks on areas surrounding the Ukrainian capital.

According to Ukrainian officials, the attack took place in the Brovary region, northeast of Kyiv. Three more persons suffered injuries in the hits, and emergency crews were dispatched to cope with injuries and assess damage.

Recent deaths come only days after one of the bloodiest Russian attacks on Kyiv and its surrounding territory in recent months. An midnight barrage on August 5 killed at least 17 people and injured scores more, with attacks reported over numerous regions of the Kyiv region including the city.

Ukrainian officials have frequently warned that the country's air defence capabilities are under increasing pressure as Russia steps up the amount and frequency of missile and drone attacks. Kyiv has pushed its Western allies to speed up the delivery of air defence equipment and interceptor missiles.

Since commencing its massive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has conducted several long-range strikes against the country. Moscow claims its assaults target military and vital infrastructure, while Ukrainian officials routinely report civilian deaths and damage to residential and other civilian institutions.

The latest attack occurred as the war enters its fifth year, with both sides increasing long-range strikes. While diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have not yet resulted in a long-lasting ceasefire, Ukrainian forces also increased their drone operations against targets within Russia.
