58 Killed in Houthi Attacks on Yemeni Forces as Conflict Escalates

Marib: At least 58 Yemeni government troops were killed in missile and drone attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels, marking one of the deadliest days in the country's civil war in four years.

The attacks targeted military positions in Marib and Hadramawt provinces, with officials saying dozens more soldiers were injured. Yemen's defence ministry vowed to respond, while the Houthis said the strikes were carried out in response to what they described as a Saudi-backed military buildup.

The escalation comes as Yemen becomes increasingly entangled in the wider regional conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel. Saudi Arabia also reported that Houthi cross-border attacks wounded 11 civilians in the southern Najran region.

The Houthis have intensified attacks on government forces and Saudi Arabia in recent weeks, ending a period of relative calm that followed a 2022 United Nations-brokered truce. The group has controlled Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and much of the country's north since 2014.

The conflict between the Houthis and the internationally recognised Yemeni government has killed hundreds of thousands of people and triggered one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
