Mexico City: Mexican authorities have caught the suspected mastermind of Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo's assassination last year, which sparked national and international outcry.
According to Security Minister Omar García Harfuch, the suspect, known as ‘R1,’ is accused of ordering Manzo's murder in November 2025 and directing an armed criminal cell affiliated to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Authorities allege that he handled the mayor's surveillance and plotted the attack.
Manzo, a famous tough anti-crime mayor known for actively following police operations, was fatally murdered while attending a Day of the Dead celebration with his family in Uruapan, Michoacán. His assassination underlined the ongoing threat that organised crime poses to Mexican public leaders.
The administration described the arrest as a key step toward destroying the criminal network suspected of being responsible for the homicide and other cartel-related crimes in the region.
