Rome: Italy's financial police said Portuguese counterparts intercepted a speedboat off the coast of Lisbon carrying over 2.6 tonnes of cocaine valued at approximately $570 million.

The interception occurred 50 nautical miles southwest of Cape Espichel following an investigation conducted by Italian authorities. Portuguese maritime police arrested four crew members aboard, including two Spaniards, an Albanian, and a man from Gibraltar.

Italian police noted organized crime syndicates are increasingly deploying high-speed ‘go-fast’ powerboats capable of exceeding 70 knots to transport massive drug shipments across Atlantic smuggling routes.
