KYIV: Civilian fatalities in Ukraine reached their highest annual level in 2025 since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, according to the United Nations.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reported at least 2,514 civilians were killed and 12,142 injured in 2025, marking a 31 percent surge in total casualties compared to the previous year.
UN monitoring officials attributed this sharp escalation to intensified clashes along the frontline and Russia's expanded deployment of long-range weaponry across Ukrainian territory.
Although the UN has officially verified nearly 15,000 civilian deaths since February 2022, human rights monitors caution that actual casualty figures are significantly higher due to restricted access to Russian-occupied areas like Mariupol.
This grim milestone coincides with stalled diplomatic negotiations and accelerating Russian territorial advances on the battlefield, as Moscow presses its material advantage against overstretched Ukrainian defense forces.
