BERLIN: German anatomist Gunther von Hagens, creator of the controversial "Body Worlds" anatomy exhibitions, has died at the age of 81.

His family and the Institute for Plastination announced his passing on Monday while confirming plans to carry out his explicit request: making his own body available for plastination.

The technique, popularized worldwide by von Hagens, preserves dissected human and animal bodies for public exhibition.

Known for sparking global conversations surrounding art, science, and anatomy, the exhibition creator requested to undergo the same preservation process following his death, a wish his family confirmed they will respect and carry out.
