Trump Approves Landmark Nuclear Agreement With Saudi Arabia

Washington DC: President Trump has formally approved a landmark 30-year civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia worth tens of billions of dollars, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. According to administration officials, the accord is designed to give American companies a central role in developing the kingdom’s energy infrastructure while denying Russia and China strategic influence. 

The agreement paves the way for U.S. firms, including Westinghouse Electric, to construct new nuclear power reactors. Additionally, a joint two-year U.S.-Saudi study will evaluate whether building a local, American-managed uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia is commercially viable.

Administration officials argue that direct U.S. involvement will prevent the technology from being misused for military purposes. If Washington objects to enrichment following the study, the kingdom is prohibited from pursuing enrichment independently or with other foreign partners for ten years.

While Saudi Arabia insists its intentions are peaceful, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman previously stated in 2018 that the nation would acquire nuclear weapons if Iran ever develops one. Critics warn the accord could spark a regional arms race, though congressional efforts to block the deal face high legal hurdles.
