London: The British government has asked FIFA to enquire into Argentina's national football team after several players displayed a banner stating ‘Las Malvinas son Argentina’s’ (‘The Falklands are Argentine’) following their 2-1 victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final.
UK Business Secretary Peter Kyle described the banner as an improper political message, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer backed demand for FIFA to investigate if the display violated football's rules banning political comments. The UK argued that the Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory with the right to self-rule.
The flag recalls the enduring sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands, also known as the Malvinas in Argentina, who fought a short war with the United Kingdom over the region in 1982. The incident revived political tensions following one of the tournament's most high-profile games.
FIFA has not declared any disciplinary penalty, but it is investigating the case under its rules barring political messages during football matches. Argentine supporters have mostly justified the gesture as a display of national identity rather than political provocation.
