Washington : US health officials are investigating nearly 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness that can cause severe watery or explosive diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea, across 34 states.
The outbreak is linked to Cyclospora cayetanensis, a parasite that spreads through contaminated food or water. While more than 1,600 cases have been confirmed, over 5,100 additional cases are still being assessed. No deaths have been reported.
Health officials suspect contaminated fresh produce, including lettuce, may be the source of the outbreak, but investigations are continuing to identify the exact cause. The CDC has urged people to wash fresh produce thoroughly and seek medical care if symptoms persist.
