Japan Cracks Down on AI Misinformation Ahead of Elections

Tokyo: Japan has passed stronger restrictions for social media use during elections, requiring AI-generated images and videos to be clearly recognised and prohibiting the spread of incorrect or misleading information about political candidates. The legislation, enacted by Parliament, will go into effect in March as officials work to protect the integrity of elections in the face of increased usage of generative AI.

The new regulation comes after charges that AI-generated content was used to insult candidates in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's 2025 leadership campaign and the country's parliamentary elections earlier this year. The government stated that the regulations are intended to ensure fair elections while maintaining freedom of expression.

Japan's laws do not impose penalties for non-compliance, in contrast to the Digital Services Act of the European Union. Rather, the government intends to provide social media firms with guidelines and mandate yearly reports on how they are putting the new standards into practice. This decision has sparked discussion over how successful the measures will be.
